Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1957, this side table by Knoll Studio features a structure centered on a single aluminum pedestal, freeing up the space beneath the tabletop and creating a continuous, sculptural silhouette. The oval “Rosso Rubino” marble, with its contrasting hallmarks, adds variety to the piece against the black base. Its significance for 21st-century design lies in this combination of structural simplicity, freedom of movement, and the expressiveness of the materials—a solution that remains relevant in contemporary interiors.
Eero Saarinen studied in Paris and at Yale University and taught at the influential Cranbrook Academy. He began his career in furniture design alongside Charles Eames, with whom he won the 1940 “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” award from MoMA in New York. He later developed iconic pieces for Knoll International, which are now featured in leading collections such as MoMA’s own.
