DESCRIPTION
Pair of table lamps; AB STILARMATUR TRANÅS; Sweden, 1960s.
Clear glass.
Measurements: 58 x 33 cm (x2).
This pair of lamps is part of the tradition of mid-20th-century Scandinavian lighting design. Crafted from clear glass, both pieces take advantage of the material’s transparency and density to create a play of reflections, volumes, and refractions that varies with the angle of the light. Their striking presence and almost mineral-like character evoke the more sculptural aspect of 1960s design, closely aligned with the Brutalist aesthetic.
AB Stilarmatur Tranås was a Swedish lighting company founded in 1946 in Tranås, a town in the province of Småland, which played a role in the development of mid-20th-century Scandinavian lighting design. During the 1950s and 1960s, the firm produced table, floor, and wall lamps characterized by a combination of functionality, craftsmanship, and attention to materials. Its products reflect the evolution of postwar Nordic interior design, which combined clean lines with warm, expressive materials such as brass, teak, glass, and fabric shades. Among the designers associated with the firm, Henrik Blomqvist stands out; he is credited with various lighting designs from the 1950s and 1960s, notable for their geometric forms and sculptural compositions.
