BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Traditional “kubbstol” armchair. Sweden, 1903.
Hand-carved and hollowed-out solid pine.
It features handwritten inscriptions on the base, one of which is dated 1903.
In good condition, with a few localized cracks and a pronounced natural patina consistent with its age.
Measurements: 75 x 59 x 59 cm. Seat height: 45 cm.

A unique example of early 20th-century Swedish folk furniture, belonging to the traditional “kubbstol” style, characteristic of Scandinavian vernacular craftsmanship. Crafted from a thick pine log that was hollowed out and shaped by hand, it features a cylindrical body from which emerge a tall, enveloping backrest and two organically shaped armrests. The seat, formed from a separate piece of wood, is integrated into the structure through a remarkably simple construction method.

The surface retains a remarkable patina acquired over time, which highlights the pine’s irregular grain, natural knots, and traces of the artisan’s work. Its sculptural character reflects a tradition of rural furniture in which the shape of the log directly influenced the design, resulting in pieces with great personality.

This type of chair is part of the tradition of Scandinavian folk art, which was particularly deeply rooted in certain regions of Sweden and Norway during the 18th and 19th centuries. Originally conceived as pieces of household furniture, “kubbstol” chairs are distinguished by their sturdiness, functionality, and close connection to traditional woodworking techniques. Historic examples of this type are preserved in institutions such as the Göteborgs stadsmuseum in Sweden.
