DESCRIPTION

VICENTE SÁNCHEZ PABLOS (Fuentes de Béjar, Salamanca, 1927 – Salamanca, 2015) for M.A.S.
Pair of armchairs, designed in 1967.
Stained beech wood with a seat and backrest upholstered in calfskin.
In very good condition. The wood has been restored, and the leather has an attractive patina. It has a few stains.
Measurements: 74 x 70 x 68 cm (each).

Designed in 1967, these armchairs reflect Vicente Sánchez Pablos’s unique interpretation of modern furniture, in which he skillfully combined traditional Spanish craftsmanship with the principles of functionalist design. The design stands out for its structural simplicity and the prominence given to natural materials.

The pieces feature a solid beech frame with straight lines, atop which rests a continuous, suspended leather seat and backrest; its natural curvature provides comfort and a sense of visual lightness. The leather fastenings—achieved using straps and wooden pieces—highlight the designer’s interest in simple and effective construction solutions.

Vicente Sánchez Pablos was one of the pioneers of Spanish furniture design in the 1960s and 1970s. As the founder of the firm M.A.S., he developed a body of work that reinterpreted folk tradition from a modern perspective. His “España” series was selected for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, and his “Matacán” rocking chair won the ADI-FAD Gold Delta Award in 1966. His career was the subject of the exhibition “Inner Territory: Rediscovering the Designer Vicente Sánchez Pablos,” held at the National Museum of Decorative Arts in Madrid in 2008, and of a solo exhibition at the Museum of Commerce in Salamanca in 2009.
