Josep Madaula i Canadell is a painter, draftsman, illustrator, and set designer whose career is characterized by a steadfast defense of figurative painting and drawing as the foundation of artistic creation. He trained at the Escola Industrial d’Arts i Oficis in Sabadell, the Escola Massana in Barcelona, and in Lille (France); he furthered his studies under the painter Alfons Gubern and studied set design at the Institut del Teatre; he later also carried out significant teaching work at the Escola Massana. His work is rooted in a figurative tradition with humanist roots, based on direct observation of reality, the strength of his drawing, and careful compositional construction. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous exhibitions, and his connection to the artistic life of Sabadell has been particularly significant; in 2012, the Museu d’Art de Sabadell and the city council published the monograph *Josep Madaula. Pintura i experiència, dedicated to his career and artistic output.
