DESCRIPTION
Circular panel; based on Florentine Baroque models; Italy, 20th century.
Semi-precious stones.
Measurements: 3 x 151.5 cm (diameter).
A circular panel made of semi-precious stones, whose composition evokes the ornamental tradition of Florentine workshops, renowned since the Renaissance for their mastery of commesso di pietre dure—a technique that transforms the stones’ chromatic qualities and natural veining into a refined decorative language.
The surface is organized around a central lapis lazuli medallion, surrounded by successive concentric rings that combine geometric motifs, oval medallions, and floral compositions. The rigorously ordered radial arrangement is enriched by profuse ornamentation featuring scrollwork, stylized flowers, and polychrome elements, in which the deep blues, greens, ochres, and warm tones of the stones contrast with the dark background, enhancing the visual richness of the composition.
Its ornamental repertoire reflects the taste for symmetry, geometry, and material sumptuousness characteristic of 17th- and 18th-century Florentine decorative arts. The evocation of these historical models, reinterpreted in the 20th century, highlights the continuity of a craft tradition in which the selection and assembly of stones of different shades allow for the creation of surfaces of extraordinary complexity and pictorial effect.
