The CHANEL Double Flap 26, from 1996–1997, is one of the most recognizable designs in the French fashion house’s leather goods collection and exemplifies the enduring aesthetic codes established by Karl Lagerfeld since he became creative director in 1983. Its design is based on the famous 2.55 bag, created by Gabrielle Chanel in February 1955, whose introduction of a chain for carrying it over the shoulder marked a new conception of feminine elegance by combining sophistication with freedom of movement.
The characteristic double-flap construction is one of this model’s defining features. Added to this are the geometric matelassé quilting, the metal chain interwoven with leather, and the iconic double-C twist lock—elements that form a visual language immediately associated with Chanel.
