BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

18th-century Dutch school.
"Landscape."
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 53 x 75 cm; 69 x 90 cm (frame).
This work depicts a typical Dutch Baroque landscape, meticulously arranged in a thoughtful and rational composition—closed on both sides and open in the center, though slightly asymmetrical. Nature is serene and rendered with attention to detail and naturalism, and the scene comes to life thanks to the figures scattered throughout the foreground: we see a pair of peasants in the central area accompanied by a small child crawling, highlighted by the bright colors of their clothing and rendered with special attention to the characterization of the figures, and in the background, a man fishing. In the background, a mountain can be glimpsed, its peaks rising above the horizon. Of all the contributions made by the countries of Northern Europe to the history of art, none has achieved the enduring significance and popularity of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting, of which the work we present here is a heir. The works of Avercamp, Van Goyen, and Ruysdael, among many others, evoke the contours, landscapes, and atmospheres of the Netherlands more vividly than any other place—large or small—has ever been depicted. Within this tradition, the most revolutionary and enduring contribution of Dutch landscape painting has undoubtedly been its naturalism. Seventeenth-century Dutch painters were the first to create a perceptually real and seemingly comprehensive image of their land and people. Although landscape as an independent genre emerged in Flanders in the 16th century, there is no doubt that this type of painting only reached its full development among Dutch artists. It can be said that they were practically the ones who invented naturalistic landscape painting, which they established as a uniquely central feature of their artistic heritage. There is no doubt that the Dutch painter, brimming with pride for his homeland, knew how to convey through his paintings the beauty of its vast plains and overcast skies, the regular layout of their meandering canals and rivers, their polders and dikes, their beaches, and, of course, their spectacular stormy seas. Despite their naturalism or their inventory-like depiction of reality, Dutch landscapes were at least as much a product of the imagination as they were of observation. The Dutch vision of reality, almost as literal as photography, does not so much trace the contours or examine the topography of its surroundings as it naturally selects and reshapes nature to present it in an exemplary manner.
