Oil on canvas.

The work depicts Saint John the Baptist, following an iconography common in 16th- and 17th-century European art, although this painting dates from the 18th century. The saint appears in a landscape, dressed in a sheepskin and a red cloak, accompanied by a lamb and carrying a cross with a phylactery alluding to Jesus. His contemplative pose—with his gaze raised to heaven and his right hand resting on his chest—conveys spirituality and reverence. This understated composition is a hallmark of contrast with the more dynamic and emotive Baroque scenes, which sought to bring the figure of the saint closer to the faithful.
According to the Gospels, Saint John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth and dedicated his life to penance and preaching in the desert, where he recognized Jesus as the Messiah. He was imprisoned by Herod Antipas and ultimately beheaded, becoming a martyr. In Christian art, he is depicted both as a child and in his adult role as an ascetic preacher. His most characteristic attributes are the animal skin, the red cloak—a symbol of his martyrdom—and the lamb, which represents Christ. The reed cross bearing the inscription “Ecce Agnus Dei” (“Behold the Lamb of God”) reinforces this connection and underscores John’s role as the forerunner of Jesus.
