This painting is a paradigmatic example of Flemish Mannerism at the height of its maturity, in which the Northern tradition converges with the Italianate aspirations that marked the artistic renewal of Antwerp during the 16th century. Having likely trained with Pieter Coecke van Aelst and Lambert Lombard, Floris embodies the figure of the *pictor doctus*, capable of integrating classical erudition, mastery of anatomy, and compositional complexity into a visual narrative of great intensity.
The subject depicted, drawn from the biblical account of the Exodus, shows the moment when Moses, obeying the divine command, causes water to gush from the rock to quench the thirst of the people of Israel in the desert. However, far from a static or merely devotional interpretation, Floris frames the scene as a vast human theater, where the miracle unfolds through a multitude of bodies in motion. The composition is organized along dynamic diagonals that guide the viewer’s gaze from the foreground, featuring robust, sculptural figures that recall the influence of Michelangelo. The accumulation of figures, in varied and expressive poses, reveals an interest in anatomy and bodily tension that places the work within the orbit of international Mannerism.
From a stylistic standpoint, the painting stands out for its warm, high-contrast color palette, dominated by reds, ochres, and earthy tones that reinforce the dramatic atmosphere of the scene. The selective lighting shapes the forms and emphasizes the gestures, while the treatment of the landscape—abrupt and almost stage-like—helps intensify the extraordinary nature of the event. The painterly execution achieves moments of great refinement in the faces and in the depiction of the female and child figures.
The exceptional nature of this work lies both in its compositional ambition and in its ability to synthesize different artistic traditions. Floris not only adapts Italian models to the Flemish context but also transforms them into a language of his own, characterized by monumentality, expressiveness, and a certain narrative theatricality. This painting also illustrates the prestige the artist achieved in his time, recognized by contemporaries and art historians as one of the leading painters of the Low Countries—a status that explains his inclusion in catalogs such as *Pictorum aliquot celebrium Germaniae Inferioris effigies* and his subsequent acclaim by figures of the stature of Peter Paul Rubens.
