Byzantine-Venetian School, 16th century.
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 45 x 38 x 3 cm.
This panel features various scenes dedicated to the Virgin Mary, arranged in compartments that allow viewers to contemplate different episodes from her life and her role in Christian tradition. The composition, with Byzantine roots, reflects a conception of the sacred image in which each scene has its own meaning and, at the same time, forms part of a narrative whole with theological content. The arrangement of the figures and the organization of the episodes evoke the tradition of Eastern icons.
The four panels depict various Marian devotions and episodes. The upper left quadrant depicts a scene of uncertain identification, possibly related to the Annunciation or a prophetic representation. In the upper right, the gathering of apostles and ecclesiastical figures appears to refer to the Dormition or the protection of the Mother of God. The lower left quadrant depicts the Dormition of the Virgin (Uspenie), one of the fundamental themes of Eastern iconography, in which Christ receives Mary’s soul—depicted as a child—surrounded by the apostles. The composition is completed by an image of the Virgin and Child, of the Eleusa type or Mother of God of Tenderness, characterized by the affectionate closeness between the two figures. The central medallion, whose identification requires further clarification, may correspond to an image of special devotional significance.
During the 16th century, Venice played an essential role as a meeting point between the artistic traditions of the East and the West. Its commercial, political, and cultural ties with territories under Byzantine influence fostered the movement of artists and figurative models. In this context, works in the Byzantine tradition retained their religious authority and appeal, while being incorporated into new contexts of production and collecting.
