This portrait belongs to the tradition of 17th-century Flemish court painting, closely linked to the representation of the Habsburg dynastic power. The figure depicted is Albert VII of Austria (1559–1621), son of Emperor Maximilian II and Maria of Austria, who ruled the Spanish Netherlands alongside his wife, the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia. He gained particular political and cultural significance during a period of remarkable artistic flourishing at the court in Brussels.

The archduke is depicted in a bust portrait, slightly turned and gazing directly at the viewer. He wears rich courtly attire in shades of red, adorned with a wide lace ruff and a necklace from which hangs the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, a symbol of his high rank. Of particular note is the elaborate red velvet headdress, embellished with a jeweled brooch. The modeling of the face—with its well-defined features and restrained expression—is a hallmark of Flemish portraiture of the period, contrasting with the dark background. The meticulous rendering of the textile and ornamental details reflects the characteristic techniques of Flemish portraiture.

The work follows the models of ceremonial portraiture prevalent in European courts in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, particularly in the Spanish Netherlands. In this context, Frans Pourbus the Younger stood out; he produced important portraits of the archdukes, as evidenced by the example from his workshop preserved at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The compositional restraint and emphasis on the attributes of rank reflect the representational function of these images, intended to preserve and disseminate the likeness of the sovereigns.
