The scene depicts Jesus, bowing his head with his hands crossed over his chest in a contemplative pose, while Saint John the Baptist, standing to his right, pours water over his head. At the top, a dove descends from the sky, a symbol of the Holy Spirit and a manifestation of Christ’s divine nature. In the background, a landscape with a twilight atmosphere, featuring small figures that complete the scene, helps create a suggestive sense of spatial depth.
The composition is brought to life through selective lighting that highlights the figures of the main characters against the darkness of the landscape. The hallmarks of warm skin tones, earthy hues, and blues of the sky lend dramatic intensity to the episode, while the loose brushwork and free application of color give the surface a spontaneous and expressive character. From a stylistic standpoint, the painting shows affinities with the tradition of the 17th-century Bolognese school and, in particular, with the artistic language of Carlo Cignani (Bologna, 1628 – Forlì, 1719). Trained initially by Giovanni Battista del Cairo and later by Francesco Albani, Cignani developed a style that combined Bolognese classicism with the influence of Correggio and Guido Reni. His style is distinguished by compositional elegance, the delicacy of the figures, and a serene and refined interpretation of religious subjects. Cignani’s work marked a significant evolution within Bolognese painting, moving away from the more vigorous formulas of the early Baroque to develop a style characterized by greater balance, softness, and chromatic sensitivity. His religious compositions stand out for the harmonious arrangement of the figures, the enveloping treatment of light, and the pursuit of spirituality expressed through restrained gestures and contemplative poses.
The connection to his artistic universe is particularly intriguing when one considers that there is a known drawing of The Baptism of Christ attributed to Carlo Cignani, preserved in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, which documents the presence of this subject within his graphic repertoire.
