PAUL DE VOS (Antwerp, 1591/95 – 1678).
“Hunting with Dogs.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 140 x 192 cm; 164 x 216 cm (frame).
Scenes of hunting and animal combat constitute one of Paul de Vos’s most celebrated contributions to Flemish Baroque painting. The work now up for auction is particularly representative of this aspect, as it brings together the compositional vigor, the tension of movement, and the expressive intensity that characterize his oeuvre. Its significance lies in its distillation of the artistic devices through which the artist transformed the animal confrontation into an image of great dramatic force.
In this painting, Paul de Vos immortalizes a bear beset by several dogs, whose bodies intertwine in a compact and dynamic composition. The open jaws, alert gazes, and the tension in the limbs focus attention on the confrontation, bringing the action closer to the viewer. The varied rendering of the fur and the hallmarks between the illuminated areas and the dark masses reinforce the animals’ physical presence. Around them, the rocky landscape and the turbulent sky prolong the tension of the scene, while the skull in the foreground accentuates its raw intensity.
The palette, dominated by browns, ochres, and golds, together with the intensity of the combat, ties in with the stylistic elements that distinguish Paul de Vos’s hunting scenes within Flemish Baroque painting. His interest thus transcends the hunting theme to transform the animal confrontation into a spectacle of strength and movement. This type of composition achieved notable popularity among the European aristocracy and in Spanish royal collections, as evidenced by the presence of the artist’s works in the Prado Museum.
Paul de Vos (Antwerp) was a Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in animals and hunting scenes. Associated with Frans Snyders, his brother-in-law, he developed a style characterized by dynamic compositions, warm tones, and intense expressiveness in the depiction of struggles and pursuits. He collaborated with Rubens and achieved considerable recognition among the European aristocracy and royal courts. His paintings were part of the collections of Philip IV and the decoration of the Torre de la Parada; today, the Prado Museum houses a significant collection of his works.
