This work depicts Saint Francis of Assisi in a moment of deep spiritual contemplation. The saint is portrayed in a bust portrait in profile, with his head slightly bowed toward the crucifix, which he gazes upon with an air of intense devotion. He wears the characteristic brown Franciscan habit, whose simplicity serves as a direct reference to the ideals of poverty and humility that defined his life and preaching. His hands, clasped in prayer, reveal the stigmata—the wounds that replicate those of the crucified Christ and which, according to hagiographic tradition, he received during his retreat on Mount Alverna in 1224. Next to the crucifix and the book is a skull, an element of special significance in Baroque religious iconography, alluding to the transience of earthly existence and to meditation on death (memento mori). The composition unfolds in an austere setting, where a rock formation serves as a transition between the figure of the saint and the outdoor landscape. In the background, the view of the blue sky adds a sense of depth.
This type of representation finds notable parallels in Spanish Golden Age painting. Its relatively small size allowed it to be integrated into chapels, convent rooms, or spaces for domestic devotion, where it could serve as a tool for personal meditation. The depiction of Saint Francis sought not only to commemorate the life of the order’s founder but also to convey his essential values.
