FRANCESC CATALÁ ROCA (Valls, Tarragona, 1922 – Barcelona, 1998).
“Calle Balmes,” 1982 edition.
Photograph on paper. No. 9/15
Measurements: 30 x 23 cm; 54 x 44 cm (framed).
Francesc Català Roca’s photography is rooted in the neorealist concept of the image, always seeking an unusual perspective and, above all, the human context of the subject. He is currently regarded by most critics as the most important Catalan photographer of the 20th century. The son of photographer Pere Català Pic, he was introduced to the art by his father. Throughout his career, he contributed to various publications, such as “Destino” and “La Vanguardia,” and illustrated numerous books with artistic photographs. He held his first solo exhibition in 1953, and among his awards are the City of Barcelona Prize (twice), the National Prize for Plastic Arts, and the Medal for Artistic Merit.
