This unique depiction of Christ on the cross is part of the tradition of Romanesque Majesties, one of the most characteristic forms of religious sculpture from the 11th and 12th centuries in the Pyrenean regions and southern France. Far from depicting Christ overcome by suffering, the image presents the Savior as a triumphant figure, imbued with a solemnity that transcends the episode of the Passion.
The body, with its stylized proportions and frontal composition, is depicted with outstretched arms in a pose of great visual power. Christ wears a long tunic, or manicata, with wide sleeves and cinched at the waist with a cincture. The meticulously carved wooden surface becomes an ornamental field featuring a succession of geometric motifs, interlacing patterns, and plant forms in relief. The decorative richness is a hallmark of the face, which is characterized by elongated features and a restrained expression. This accentuates the figure’s solemn and timeless character.
During the 12th century, Romanesque Majesties held a prominent place in the religious life of Christian communities in Catalonia and the Pyrenees. These images, linked to the tradition of the Christus triumphans, depicted Christ alive and clothed in sovereign dignity, emphasizing his victory over death and his divine nature. His ceremonial attire, rather than emphasizing physical torment, evoked the majesty of a heavenly sovereign.Due to its formal and ornamental characteristics, this work can be linked to the repertoire of the great medieval Majesties preserved in Catalonia, including the famous Batlló Majesty and the Christ of Beget. These affinities allow it to be situated within a shared artistic context between the workshops of southern France and the Catalan regions, where models, techniques, and iconographic formulas circulated.
