DESCRIPTION
CONSTANT ROUX (Mardella, 1865–1942).
"The Wrath of Achilles."
Bronze.
Signed, with foundry stamp.
Measurements: 24 x 23 x 20 cm; 31 cm (height including base).
He began his artistic career as a wood sculptor under the tutelage of the Marseille cabinetmaker Blanqui. He later formalized his studies at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Marseille and subsequently in Paris, where he was admitted to the prestigious workshops of Jules Cavelier and Louis-Ernest Barrias. In 1894, he achieved one of the highest honors for an artist of his time by winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in sculpture with his work on the theme of Achilles donning his armor after the death of Patroclus. This allowed him to reside at the historic Villa Medici from 1895 to 1898. In 1925, he was elected a member of the Academy of Marseille.
