This sculpture is a refined example of Égide Rombaux’s work associated with Belgian Art Nouveau, in which the naturalistic depiction of the female figure is combined with plant-inspired ornamentation. Titled “Églantine” (wild rose), the work depicts the bust of a young woman with half-closed eyelids and a serene expression, whose gathered hair accentuates the elegance of her features.
The sculptor demonstrates a particular sensitivity in the modeling of the face and neck, with smooth surfaces and delicate transitions in volume. The figure emerges from a prismatic base decorated with flowers and stems in relief, whose organic contours are hallmarks of the Art Nouveau aesthetic. This integration of plant elements and the human figure reflects the Art Nouveau aesthetic, while the young woman’s introspective demeanor introduces a poetic and symbolist dimension.
Égide Rombaux was one of the leading sculptors of the Belgian school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Charles Van der Stappen, he also worked alongside Jef Lambeaux. He won the Godecharle Prize in 1887 and the Prix de Rome in 1891, which allowed him to further his training in Italy. A member of the Royal Academy of Belgium since 1911, he developed a significant career in monumental and decorative sculpture. His work is represented in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, among other institutions.
