BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

French School; 15th century.
“Crucifixion.”
Patinated bronze.
Measurements: 26 x 18 x 3 cm; 39 cm (base).
The figure is depicted with arms outstretched horizontally, a bare and elongated torso, and legs positioned parallel to one another, creating a stylized silhouette that emphasizes the spiritual and ascetic dimension of the depiction. The figure stands out for its simplified anatomy, the linear rendering of the ribs and abdomen, and the meticulous ornamentation of the garment covering the hips. The circular motifs on the torso and the succession of decorative elements on the cloth create a visual rhythm that is a hallmark of the composition’s simplicity. The bronze’s patina, with its dark hues and warm reflections, enhances the volumes and underscores the work’s archaic character.
From a formal perspective, the piece draws on the tradition of medieval religious sculpture, in which the representation of Christ moves away from classical anatomical idealization to prioritize expressiveness, frontal orientation, and devotional content. Its stylized conception and the combination of naturalistic features with ornamental elements evoke the language of late Gothic sculpture, at a time when small-scale images played a prominent role in both liturgy and private devotion.
The fifteenth century was a period of profound transformation for the arts in France. Despite the consequences of the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453), the courts, religious institutions, and major urban centers maintained a high level of artistic activity. During the second half of the century, economic recovery and patronage from the monarchy, the nobility, and the Church fostered the production of altarpieces, funerary sculptures, liturgical objects, and small images intended for private devotion.
