GEORGES OMERTH (Paris, active 1895 – 1925).
“Face of a Young Man.”
Terracotta.
Signed.
Measurements: 44 x 37 x 23 cm.
A French sculptor active from the late 19th century through the early decades of the 20th century, Georges Omerth trained as a disciple of Albert Carrier-Belleuse and began his career creating Italian-style figures depicting World War I soldiers—with their trumpets and flags—on oval bronze bases. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he presented Art Nouveau sculptures and, later, works that fell within the Art Deco style. A lover of theater and the circus, he created works depicting Columbines, clowns, and Harlequins, as well as children and ballerinas, in both bronze and bronze and ivory, often produced by Edmond Etling. Works by Georges Omerth are currently preserved at the Casa Lis Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Salamanca and the Museum of Fine Arts in Reims, as well as in various private collections.
