BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian or Flemish school; 16th century.
“Charles V.”
Patinated bronze with glass eyes.
Measurements: 63 x 8 cm; 71 x 13 cm (base).
The image of Charles V occupies a prominent place in the development of the “portrait of power” during the Renaissance. In this relief, the emperor is depicted in armor and wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, attributes that allude both to his military authority and to his dynastic and chivalric dignity. The inscription “CHARLES – QUINT” identifies the monarch, while the glass eyes lend liveliness and a physical presence to the effigy. The relief format focuses attention on the face and the symbols of his rank, in an image conceived not only to recognize the sovereign but also to perpetuate his memory and project his authority. In a context in which Charles V ruled an extensive network of European and American territories, the portrait played an essential role in disseminating his image and expressing a vision of monarchy with universal reach.
Among the key points of reference for contextualizing the work are the portraits of Charles V by Leone Leoni and his circle, preserved in the Prado Museum and other European collections. These portraits demonstrate how the emperor’s image was constructed through a careful selection of physical features, attire, and emblems of dignity. Also relevant is the bust of Charles V housed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, which is linked to the sculptural tradition of the Low Countries and to the early dissemination of the monarch’s image.Although these examples are not necessarily direct models for this relief, they allow us to situate it within a shared artistic tradition, in which the imperial effigy circulated across various formats and techniques. Its significance lies in the adaptation of this iconography to a relief composition, which brings together the essential symbols of the figure’s authority within a limited space.
