Italian School; c. 1700.
“Cherubs.”
Gilded bronze.
Measurements: 15.5 x 27 x 11 cm.
A sculptural fragment in gilded bronze, consisting of three heads of winged cherubs arranged in a horizontally oriented composition of great ornamental richness. The childlike faces, with serene expressions and delicately modeled features, emerge from an exuberant succession of curls, feathers, and undulating forms that lend the piece a marked sense of movement. The meticulous rendering of the hair and wings, combined with the radiance of the gilding, accentuates the hallmarks of light and shadow and enhances the piece’s artistic quality.
Given its format and arrangement, the work may have been part of a religious ornamental element, possibly the base or pedestal of an image of the Immaculate Conception. This hypothesis is consistent with the Baroque iconographic tradition, in which angels and cherubs play a fundamental role in the representation of heavenly glory and in the exaltation of the figure of the Virgin. In this type of composition, the winged heads helped create a visual transition between the sacred image and its surroundings, integrating the figurative sculpture into a more complex decorative scheme. The work reflects the taste for ornate decoration and theatricality characteristic of Italian religious sculpture of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The combination of a dynamic composition with the delicacy of the children’s faces reflects a Baroque sensibility that seeks to convey an impression of movement and lightness.
