The piece now up for auction relates to Tom Carr’s exploration of balance, space, and movement—fundamental elements of his sculptural language. Its undulating profile transforms the wood into a volume of apparent flexibility, reminiscent of the dynamism of the propellers and spirals that recur in his work. The tension between the stability of the base and the lightness of the ascending form allows the work to be interpreted as a synthesis of constructive rigor and formal freedom, in which the sculpture takes on a distinct rhythmic dimension.

A painter and creator of light installations, Tom Carr grew up in the United States but returned to Spain to study at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He began his career in the 1970s and soon created significant installations, such as the one at Espacio 10 of the Miró Foundation in Barcelona (1981). He also taught at the Massana School in the same city. In 2009, the Caixa Tarragona exhibition hall hosted a retrospective exhibition dedicated to him, covering his work from 1974 through that same year. Carr’s work is currently represented in the Museums of Modern Art in Tarragona and Céret (France), the Österreichischer Skulpturenpark in Graz (Austria), the Joan Miró Foundation, and elsewhere.
