Large Art Nouveau centerpiece made of silver-plated pewter, depicting two peasant women from Berry holding a large circular bowl in their hands. The piece clearly reflects the influence and aesthetic of the Art Nouveau period, both in its structure and its decoration.
Jean Eugène Baffier (Neuvy-le-Barrois, 1851–Paris, 1920) was a French sculptor and writer. He first worked as a stonemason on the cathedral’s restoration project, then pursued a career as a sculptor in Paris. He became known for his bronze figurines (The Grape Harvester—Le Vigneron, The Reaper—Le Faucheur, The Old Man—Le Vielleux) and pewter pieces (vases, candelabras, tableware), all decorated with plant motifs.
