This 17th century Flemish tapestry, executed in the style known as "verdure" (derived from the French verdure, "vegetation"), is a sample of the textile virtuosity of Northern Europe during the Baroque period. This genre of tapestry, highly appreciated in the Netherlands and France, is characterized by depicting lush landscapes, often idyllic forests or fantastic gardens, populated by dense vegetation and, occasionally, fauna or mythological figures integrated into the environment.
In the tender tapestry, the figure of Diana the hunter, recognizable by the quiver of arrows hanging from her back, emerges from an exuberant landscape, without imposing herself on it, but participating in its organic rhythm. Her presence, although central, does not interrupt the vegetal continuity, but is inserted into it as one more manifestation of the natural dynamism that permeates the entire scene. Plants of various kinds, small flowers, stylized leaves and the dense treetops form a continuous weave that envelops the female figure. Even her naked body, barely veiled by an embroidered garment that floats around her with choreographic grace, seems to spring from the very fabric of the forest.
