DESCRIPTION

Tapestry; Possibly workshop of FRANS VAN DER BORGHT; Brussels, first half of the 18th century.
"History of Don Quixote".
Wool and silk.
Based on a cardboard by Lambert de Honot, second Charles Coypel.
Measurements: 320 x 535 cm.
Probably made in the workshop of Frans van der Borght in Brussels during the first half of the 18th century, this tapestry is an example of European tapestry inspired by literature. Woven in wool and silk, it combines structural solidity with a rich chromatic and luminous quality, typical of the great Flemish centers of production. The work is based on compositions derived from the designs of the French painter Charles Coypel, in turn reinterpreted from models associated with Lambert de Hondt II, which evidences the complex circulation of artistic models in Europe at the time.
The scene depicted takes as its source the famous novel Don Quixote of La Mancha, a work that enjoyed enormous popularity in the 18th century and inspired numerous series of tapestries intended to decorate aristocratic residences. In these compositions, the episodes of the knight from La Mancha are transformed into theatrical and refined scenes, where humor, adventure and the idealistic character of the protagonist are integrated into elegant and balanced landscapes. The characters are richly attired, and the narrative unfolds with a scenographic sense that brings the tapestry closer to pictorial language.
Frans van der Borght's workshop was part of the prestigious tapestry tradition of Brussels, one of the main European centers of luxury textile production. These workshops stood out for their ability to adapt complex pictorial designs to the textile medium, maintaining great fidelity to the original drawing and achieving effects of depth, light and texture through the combined use of wool and silk. The diffusion of the Quixote series also demonstrates the international taste for literary themes, as well as the admiration for Spanish culture in European court circles.
Overall, this tapestry is not only a work of great technical quality, but also a testimony to the dialogue between literature, painting and decorative arts in the 18th century. Through it, the figure of Don Quixote transcends the literary sphere to become a prestigious visual motif, capable of uniting narrative, elegance and traditional craftsmanship in a single piece.
