BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Funerary altar with Roman soldier. Rome, possibly 2nd-3rd century A.D.
Carved stone.
In good state of preservation. It has undergone a cleaning and consolidation process that we detail below:
Measurements: 43 x 22,5 x 10 cm.
The soldier represented on the front of this altar is dressed in the Roman manner: long tunic that covers the arms and is fastened at the waist with a cord, a cloak that is tied with three cords that fall over the shoulders and are knotted at the chest and probably a braccae to cover the legs and feet. He carries what could be a manica in his right hand. The left arm holds a sort of long staff ending in a ball. The bowed head shows a pensive and melancholic attitude. At the waist there is a shape that could correspond to a pugio, Roman dagger. It is crowned by a flat profile molding topped by two pulvins. Between the two pulvins is a patera with a central umbo sculpted in relief. Below is another straight molding, wider, which is very worn, but it seems to be decorated with what could be a flower on the left and another on the right, and in the middle there are some carved letters, one of which seems to be an M, invoking the gods manes. It is difficult to appreciate. It ends in a cleavage in whose central part the head is located.
