BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Vessel of the Daunia culture. Apulia. Magna Grecia. Southern Italy, V-IV centuries BC.
Pottery worked on a potter's wheel, oxidizing firing, painted.
In very good state of preservation. It presents very small breaks in the mouth and base. It has undergone a process of cleaning and consolidation.
Measurements: 29 cm (height) x 10.3 cm (mouth).
Vessel of ovoid body, marked neck, cylindrical shape and slightly exvasado lip. It has two horizontal handles of circular section placed vertically, on both sides of which there are four mamelons. It has been made in orange clay with beige engobe (in some parts pink and decorated with bands and lines of brown and orange paint on the base, galbo, handles, mamelons, neck and mouth). On the shoulder, between the mamelons, two palmettes. The shape is very similar to the stamno. The difference is that the latter has a larger mouth. From 400 to 300 B.C. Daunian pottery shows a clear differentiation from the older tradition, transformed by the progressive influence of Hellenization. At the end of the 5th century, the use of the potter's wheel appeared for the modeling and decoration of the vessels, while the use of bichrome quickly disappeared. The decorative motifs refer less and less to the traditional repertoire, incorporating mainly vegetal elements and being decorated with simple parallel bands of bright, brown or orange paint.
Parallel examples are housed in the Civic Museum of Bellinzona, Italy, (reg. no. 98) and in the Civic Archaeological Museum of Como, Italy.
