DESCRIPTION
Head of Medusa; Roman Empire, 1st-2nd century AD.
White chalcedony.
Measurements: 19 x 16 cm.
Sculptural representation of the head of Medusa, with hair formed by snakes and facial features that convey an expression of threat or apotropaic power. Carved in white chalcedony, the piece combines hardness and translucency, characteristics that allow a detailed modeling of the anatomical elements and snakes.
The iconography of Medusa had a protective role in Roman art: it was used to ward off evil and protect objects, spaces or even people. The choice of white chalcedony could have accentuated the visibility of the details and given an elegant and lasting visual effect.
Medusa heads are documented on various supports, from reliefs and cabochons to mosaics and sculptures, being a popular motif in both domestic and public contexts. The treatment of the expression, facial features and dynamism of the snakes reflects the Hellenistic tradition inherited by Roman sculptors, combining symbolic functionality and ornamental value.
