Important couple in intimate attitude, belonging to the iconographic repertoire of the mithuna, a recurring motif in the sculptural decoration of the temples of medieval India. These figures, loaded with symbolism, embody the union of the masculine and feminine principles, being associated with ideas of fertility, prosperity and cosmic harmony.

The composition shows the two figures standing in close interaction, holding hands in a gesture of sensual closeness. Their bodies adopt a soft flexion that brings dynamism and sensuality to the whole. The female figure slightly inclines her head towards her partner, intensifying the affectionate character of the scene.

Both appear richly ornamented, with necklaces and elaborate belts, while the cloths adhere to the body, subtly describing the anatomy, in line with the aesthetic canons of medieval Indian art. The faces, with schematic features and serene expression, refer to an ideal of timeless beauty.

This type of sculpture was part of decorative programs in temples, where the couple scenes not only had an erotic component, but also a deeply symbolic and auspicious one, acting as protective elements and generators of vital energy within the sacred space.
