DESCRIPTION
Vase with lid. China, Han Dynasty, 220 BC. - 220 A.D.
Terracotta.
Provenance: Private collection, Mr. H. Hossegor, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France.
Scientific Pr.: Thermoluminescence test attached.
Conservation: Good state of conservation.
Measurements: 36.5 cm high.
Funerary vase with slender profile lid, long truncated cone neck and slightly widened base. Made in terracotta, it presents remains of painted decoration in reddish tones on dark engobe, organized in bands with geometric motifs and wavy lines that cross the surface.
The piece corresponds to the ceramic models of the Han dynasty destined to the funerary trousseau (mingqi), conceived to accompany the deceased in the transition to the afterlife. Its stylized morphology and the sobriety of its decoration reflect an aesthetic characteristic of the period, where symbolic functionality prevails over excessive ornamentation.
