This huaco embodies the extraordinary capacity of the Mochica artisans to capture human individuality, moving away from idealization and approaching a profoundly realistic and expressive representation.
The face, with sober features and intense gaze, conveys a strong psychological presence, a distinctive feature of this type of pieces, which are often interpreted as portraits of high-ranking characters or relevant individuals within society.
This type of huacos not only fulfilled a utilitarian or ritual function, but also played a symbolic role in funerary contexts, acting as a representation of the individual or as a vehicle of identity in the transition to the afterlife.
