Satyr's head. Roman. Century I - III A.D.
Marble.
Provenance: Private collection, Toulouse, France.
Good state of preservation.
Measurements: 17 cm high; 29 cm high with pedestal.
This important marble head represents a satyr, a figure belonging to the court of Dionysus in classical mythology, associated with the world of wine, nature and instinctive impulses. Satyrs, hybrids between man and animal, embodied debauchery and vitality, being a recurring motif in Greco-Roman sculpture.
The piece stands out for its expressiveness, with a face of marked features and a slight smile that suggests a lively and mischievous character. The hair, worked in voluminous wavy locks, is intertwined with elements that evoke her wild nature, bringing dynamism to the composition. This treatment responds to models of Hellenistic tradition, where movement and expressive intensity are emphasized.
The state of conservation allows us to clearly appreciate the quality of the modeling and the detailed work of the surface, despite the slight losses typical of its age.
The work, of small format, must have been part of a decorative ensemble or had an ornamental function in domestic contexts or gardens, where this type of iconography was especially appreciated.
Overall, it is a representative example of Roman sculpture inspired by Greek models, combining naturalism and expressiveness in the representation of mythological figures linked to the Dionysian sphere.
