DESCRIPTION
Sculptural fragment of a foot wearing a caliga.
Roman Empire, 2nd century A.D.
Pavonazzetto marble.
Good general preservation of the fragment. With erosions, superficial deposits and small losses according to the antiquity.
Measurements: 38 x 21 x 48 cm.
Important Roman sculptural fragment in pavonazzetto marble, corresponding to a foot wearing caliga, the military sandal associated to legionaries, officers and representations of military authority. Due to its dimensions, carving quality and monumental character, the piece must have been part of a large statue, possibly linked to a heroic, military or imperial image.
The sculptural work reveals a remarkable attention to detail in the representation of the footwear: the crossed straps, the knots and the enveloping structure of the caliga are resolved with precision and depth, generating an intense play of light and shadow on the surface of the marble. The stone mass preserved at the base, more lightly worked, underlines its condition as a fragment belonging to a larger sculptural composition.
The caliga is not here a simple element of clothing, but a sign of rank, discipline and military power. In Roman iconography, military footwear is associated with warrior virtue, command and the public presence of emperors, generals or persons invested with authority. The choice of pavonazzetto marble, a material of great prestige for its veins and chromatic nuances, reinforces the original importance of the work.
Despite its fragmentary condition, the piece retains an extraordinary plastic presence. Its scale, the nobility of the material and the iconographic strength of the motif make it a particularly attractive testimony of monumental Roman sculpture, where anatomical and ornamental detail participated in a visual discourse of prestige, power and imperial memory.
