This type of figurines, modeled in terracotta using molds, is one of the most characteristic and recognizable expressions of the Colima culture. This tradition developed in northwestern Mexico between approximately 200 B.C. and 500 A.D., in a territory of rugged landscapes, warm and humid climate, and an extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna that deeply influenced its symbolic imagery.
Colima's society was fundamentally agricultural, but its life revolved around an intense ritual and ceremonial universe, where religion occupied a central place. A large part of the archaeological findings associated with this culture come from funerary contexts, especially tombs linked to high status characters within the political and spiritual sphere, which underlines the importance of ancestor worship and beliefs about the afterlife.
Their artistic production stands out especially for ceramics, both for daily use and rituals. Among these creations stand out the statuettes and figurines, made in reddish clay, often enriched with white and orange pigments that bring life and expressiveness to the forms. These pieces not only reflect a remarkable technical mastery, but also an aesthetic sensibility that combines naturalism and symbolism.
