DESCRIPTION
Cylindrical vessel; Maya culture, Honduras -El Salvador, 500- 800 A.D.
Carved stone.
Measurements: 7.5 x 3.5 cm.
Cylindrical vessel made of dark green stone with a carefully carved surface. It presents a decorative composition organized in horizontal bands. The superior band is ornamented with a motif of stylized glyphs and geometric elements of symbolic character, typical of the Mesoamerican iconographic repertoire, in the inferior band appear two heads of deities in relief, represented with great detail and carrying circular earspools of discoidal type, besides ceremonial attributes in the hands. One of the figures stands out for its singular representation, with curly mustache and goatee, uncommon features in the classic Mayan iconography, which suggests a possible symbolic function or of identity character within the ritual context. The interior of the vessel preserves traces of red pigment in the base, an indication of its ceremonial use or its votive character.
It is very likely that it is an object of ritual or ceremonial use associated with elite contexts. In addition, its iconography suggests a relationship with religious practices, offerings or storage of sacred substances. In Classic period Maya culture, this type of carved stone vessels and containers were part of a repertoire of elite objects closely linked to ritual, ceremonial and power legitimization practices. The iconographic richness reflects the complex Maya cosmology, in which the material and spiritual worlds were deeply interconnected.
The Maya culture was one of the most important civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica, developing over a vast territory that today encompasses southeastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. Its history extends from the Preclassic period (approx. 2000 B.C.) to the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, reaching its maximum splendor during the Classic period (250-900 A.D.), when great cities such as Tikal, Palenque or Copán flourished. The Maya stood out for their advanced knowledge of astronomy, mathematics and hieroglyphic writing, being one of the few cultures in the ancient world to develop a complete writing system.
