Pretty lady: Chipícuaro Culture, Mexico, Preclassic period, 300 BC- 100 AD.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 7 x 13 cm.
Female figure belonging to the Chupícuaro culture, dated between the Late Preclassic period, example of early Mesoamerican ceramic production, in which the representation of the human body acquires a strong symbolic value, especially linked to fertility and continuity of life. The piece presents a stylized figure of softly modeled features, in which femininity is clearly emphasized through prominent breasts and wide hips, attributes associated with fertility and life cycles. This treatment of the body does not seek anatomical realism, but rather the expression of fundamental symbolic concepts within the religious and social thought of the Chupícuaro culture.the surface of the figure is richly decorated using the pastillaje technique, which allows the addition of small elements in relief. Thanks to this resource, details such as the eyes, the earrings and a necklace composed of circular elements are defined, providing visual richness and greater iconographic complexity to the whole.
The Chupícuaro culture developed in western Mexico during the Late Preclassic period, approximately between 300 B.C. and 100 A.D., in the region of the current state of Guanajuato and nearby areas of the Bajío. It is recognized mainly for its extraordinary ceramic production, considered one of the most refined in Mesoamerica at this early stage, its figures and vessels are characterized by a high level of stylization, great aesthetic sense and a strong symbolic load.
