Amulet of Thot represented as a baboon, made of faience and dated to the Egyptian Low Period (664-332 BC). It is a small piece conceived as a protective and votive object, in which the god is identified through one of his most common animal forms in late Egyptian iconography.
Thoth was an essential divinity of the Egyptian pantheon, linked to wisdom, writing, calculation and cosmic order. Although his most common representation is that of the ibis, he also appears as a baboon, an animal associated with the observation of the sky, ritual behavior and connection with sacred knowledge. In this form, the baboon could be represented in a hieratic or vigilant attitude, reinforcing its role as guardian of the divine order.
During the Late Epoch, the production of amulets in faience experienced a remarkable expansion, parallel to the growing importance of personal religiosity. This greenish blue material was symbolically associated with rebirth, regeneration and the primordial aquatic world, which made it an ideal support for objects of a protective nature.
