BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Figure of Mars. Rome, 1st–3rd centuries AD.
Bronze.
Provenance: private collection, France.
It retains a dark patina with greenish areas typical of ancient bronze, as well as losses consistent with its archaeological age.
Measurements: 9.5 cm high.

Small Roman bronze figure representing Mars, god of war and one of the principal deities of the Roman pantheon. The figure is depicted standing, with a bare torso, a cloak draped over the shoulders, and a tall helmet or plume, attributes that identify him as the warrior god.

During the Imperial period, small bronze statuettes of deities were widely used in domestic, votive, and ritual contexts. Mars, in addition to his warlike nature, held strong protective and civic significance, linked to the power of Rome, the defense of the community, and the military identity of the Roman world.

Despite its small size and fragmentary condition, it retains a remarkable expressive power, particularly in its frontal pose, the raised arm, and the presence of the helmet, which reinforce its identification as a votive image of the god.
