DESCRIPTION
Aegis of Khnum. Ancient Egypt, Late Period, c. 664–323 B.C.
Bronze.
Measurements: 11.5 cm high.
Aegis or Egyptian ritual emblem associated with the god Khnum, a creator deity linked to the Nile, fertility, and the shaping of human beings on the potter’s wheel. The piece features a semicircular structure, resembling a wide necklace or ritual pectoral, topped by the figure of the god with a ram’s head, one of his most characteristic iconographic attributes.
This type of aegis, common in bronze during the Late Period, is associated with votive and cultic contexts. It could form part of ritual objects, standards, or processional supports, and its function was linked to divine protection and the symbolic presence of the deity in religious settings.
The image of Khnum reinforces the piece’s regenerative significance, as the god was venerated as the creator and guarantor of life, especially in relation to the fertilizing waters of the Nile. The surface retains a green and reddish patina characteristic of ancient bronze, along with concretions consistent with its archaeological age, maintaining a notable ritual presence despite its small size.
