BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Harpocrates. Ancient Egypt, Hellenistic Period, 3rd–1st centuries BCE.
Terracotta.
Measurements: 10.5 cm high.

Terracotta figure representing Harpocrates, a Greco-Roman adaptation of the Egyptian god Horus as a child. The deity is depicted with childlike features, a hand raised to the mouth, and a naked body, following a characteristic iconography in which the gesture of the finger to the lips alludes to his status as a divine child.

During the Hellenistic Period, the image of Harpocrates became widely disseminated in Egypt and throughout the Mediterranean, associated with cults of protection, fertility, and regeneration. His figure, an heir to the child Horus associated with Isis, was reinterpreted in a more popular and domestic style, especially in small terracotta pieces intended for private devotion.

The piece retains the naive expressiveness typical of these works, with frontal modeling, rounded forms, and traces of the original surface. Its small size and recognizable iconography make it an interesting testament to the religious syncretism between the Egyptian tradition and the Hellenistic world.
