Important Moche sculptural bowl in polychrome terracotta, modeled in the shape of a skull. The piece stands out for the expressive intensity of the face, with large circular eyes, a schematic nose, an open mouth, and visible teeth—features enhanced by painted decoration in reddish tones on a light background.

The Moche culture, which flourished on the northern coast of Peru between the 2nd and 7th centuries AD, achieved extraordinary mastery in sculptural ceramics. Their vessels were not merely utilitarian objects, but rather vessels of complex ritual iconography linked to power, death, fertility, sacrifice, and transformation. In this context, the depiction of the skull refers to the Moche funerary and ceremonial universe, where death is integrated into a cycle of transition and renewal.

The piece combines the function of a container with a powerful symbolic dimension. The frontal treatment of the face, the open mouth, and the intensity of the gaze give the bowl an almost ritualistic presence, while the painted linear motifs run across the surface as dynamic signs that accentuate the visual tension of the image.

Due to its iconography, expressiveness, provenance, and technical quality, it is a particularly attractive piece within the field of pre-Columbian Andean ceramics collecting.
