DESCRIPTION
Water jug. Nazca, Peru, c. 400–600 AD.
Polychrome terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Barcelona, Spain.
Measurements: 18 cm high.
Nazca jug in polychrome terracotta, with a globular body, narrow neck, small perforated side handles, and painted decoration on the upper part of the vessel. The piece has a balanced and compact structure, with a polished reddish surface and an ornamental band featuring geometric motifs and schematic symbols in black and cream tones.
The Nazca culture, which developed on the southern coast of Peru, produced some of the most refined ceramic works in the pre-Columbian Andean world. Its vessels are characterized by their rich colors, precise design, and the use of symbolic motifs—both abstract and figurative—linked to ritual, ceremonial, and funerary contexts.
In this example, the decoration is concentrated on the shoulder area, where a horizontal band frames motifs with a strong graphic character. The alternation of linear forms, vertical bands, and curvilinear elements creates an orderly visual rhythm that is marked by contrast with the smooth, solid mass of the lower body. The small side handles reinforce the vessel’s functionality and lend balance to its silhouette.
