DESCRIPTION
Mixtec vessel, Mexico, c. 1200–1500 CE
Terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Bourges, France.
Condition: good condition, intact.
Measurements: 26 cm high.
Mixtec terracotta vessel with a globular body, high neck, and slightly flared rim, decorated on the upper part with a painted band of geometric and linear motifs. The piece stands out for its formal balance and the clarity of its structure, with a broad, resounding volume that contrasts with the rich ornamentation concentrated in the shoulder area.
The Mixtec culture, which developed in the regions of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero, achieved remarkable artistic refinement during the Mesoamerican Postclassic period. Its ceramic productions, along with goldsmithing, codices, and ritual objects, reflect a complex visual culture based on the repetition of signs, decorative bands, and motifs with strong symbolic meaning.
In this example, the decoration alternates between rectangular fields, wavy lines, dots, and stepped motifs, creating an orderly visual rhythm around the vessel. The ornamentation, applied to the reddish background of the terracotta, gives the piece a ceremonial and representative character, beyond its possible function as a container.
