BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Vessel. Nazca, Peru, c. 200–700 CE.
Polychrome terracotta.
Provenance: private collection, Wilma and Max Schuhmacher.
Measurements: 19 cm in diameter.

Nazca vessel in polychrome terracotta, open-mouthed with a truncated conical profile, decorated on the exterior with a wide geometric band. The piece features an orderly composition of interlinked rhombuses, outlined in thick black lines and filled with a reddish grid pattern on a cream background, all framed by dark bands at the top and bottom.

The Nazca culture, which developed on the southern coast of Peru, produced some of the most refined ceramic art in the pre-Columbian Andean world. Its vessels are distinguished by the precision of their design, their rich color palette, and the use of symbolic and geometric motifs that organize the surface with a strong sense of rhythm.

In this example, the succession of rhombuses creates a continuous decoration with a strong graphic impact, based on repetition, balance, and compositional clarity. The formal simplicity of the bowl is a hallmark of pottery conceived not only as a functional object but also as a vehicle for visual identity and ritual significance.
