DESCRIPTION
Vessel. Chupícuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico, c. 400 B.C.–100 A.D.
Polychrome terracotta.
Condition: intact.
Provenance: Dutch private collection, 1970s.
Measurements: 13 cm high.
Chupícuaro vessel in polychrome terracotta, with a globular body, short neck, and flared rim, decorated with geometric motifs in reddish, black, and cream tones. The piece stands out for the harmony of its proportions and the rich graphic design of its decoration, centered around the neck and upper body.
The Chupícuaro culture, which developed in the Guanajuato region, represents one of the most refined ceramic traditions of Preclassic Mexico. Its vessels are characterized by the use of balanced forms, polished surfaces, and polychrome decorations of great visual impact, based on bands, triangles, reticulated patterns, broken lines, and contrasting fields of color.
In this example, the decoration combines undulating bands, reticulated areas, and broad chromatic fields that accentuate the vessel’s structure. The hallmarks of the reddish body and the black and cream motifs give the piece a striking ornamental presence, typical of pottery associated with both prestigious domestic use and ritual or funerary contexts.
