BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Baroque sculpture base. 17th century.
Marble.
Condition: fragment in generally good condition, with surface wear resulting from outdoor exposure in a garden.
Provenance: Robert Barley private collection, United Kingdom.
Measurements: 87 cm in height.

Fragment of a Baroque marble sculpture, corresponding to a base with remnants of a standing figure. The piece preserves the rectangular base, both feet, part of a vertical support element, and a side fragment, suggesting the original presence of a larger sculpture, likely intended for an architectural, ornamental, or garden setting.

The treatment of the feet, carved in a naturalistic style, together with the vertical support adorned with plant motifs or textured patterns, reflects the sculptural language of the Baroque, where the human figure was frequently integrated into dynamic, allegorical, or decorative compositions. Although it survives only in fragments, the piece retains a remarkable sculptural presence and allows one to appreciate the quality of the marble and the visual impact of the original whole.

Of particular interest is its status as a historical fragment from a garden setting. Surface wear, patina, and marks from outdoor exposure are part of its material history and reinforce its antique character. Such sculptural remains, when they retain significant anatomical and structural elements, are particularly evocative, as they encapsulate the memory of a monumental work that has disappeared or been partially lost.

Given its scale, material, and British provenance, it constitutes a highly attractive decorative fragment, both from a sculptural standpoint and for its ability to integrate into collections of ancient art, historic architecture, or garden elements.
