Eros. Roman culture, 1st–2nd centuries AD.
Marble.
Provenance: French private collection.
Measurements: 54 cm high; 23 cm long.
Roman marble relief depicting Eros, the deity associated with love, desire, and youthful vitality. The figure appears nude, with childlike anatomy, a serene face, and a slightly inclined body, set within a rectangular plaque that accentuates its frontal and decorative presence.
Eros was one of the most widespread and cherished images in the Roman repertoire, especially in domestic, funerary, and ornamental contexts. As the heir to Greek and Hellenistic models, he could symbolize ideal beauty, the power of love, divine childhood, and, in certain contexts, the continuity of affection beyond death.
The piece stands out for the softness of its modeling, visible in the torso, abdomen, and legs, as well as for the delicate treatment of the face and hair. The composition retains a remarkable sculptural quality, with a body of rounded forms and a slightly dynamic pose that lends naturalness to the figure. The raised right arm and the lowered left arm suggest that it may have been part of a larger composition or held attributes that are now lost.
The surface of the marble bears patina, deposits, and wear typical of its archaeological age, without hindering the overall interpretation of the image. Due to its scale, noble material, and iconography, this relief constitutes an attractive example of Imperial Roman sculpture, in which the theme of Eros combines decorative value, symbolic significance, and formal refinement.
