Cosmetic palettes are among the most characteristic objects of the material culture of Predynastic Egypt. This piece, with its distinct rhomboidal or lanceolate profile, reflects the geometric forms developed during the Naqada I–II phases, prior to the widespread use of zoomorphic models and the large ceremonial palettes of a later period.

Typically carved from grauvaca, these pieces were used to grind minerals employed in the preparation of cosmetics, particularly malachite—used as a green pigment—and galena, used to produce gray-black hues similar to the later kohl. Their practical function gradually coexisted with a symbolic dimension, evident in the increasing formal refinement these palettes underwent throughout the 4th millennium B.C.

The pronounced horizontal orientation of this specimen, its careful regularity, and the geometric simplicity of its outline are characteristics consistent with predynastic productions predating the large figurative compositions of the period’s end. Beyond their everyday use, these types of objects constitute significant evidence of technical development and body adornment practices in the communities of the Nile Valley prior to the formation of the Pharaonic state.

Predynastic grauvaca palettes of a comparable type are preserved in major archaeological collections, including those of the British Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
